Why we can’t get enough of clay

Written by Chelsea Tromans

Clay masks are more than just an Instagram fad. There’s a reason they make for a good selfie, especially once you rinse them off. Clay masks are great for promoting a clearer, brighter and glowing complexion. Here’s why we can’t get enough of clay in our skincare:

They help rebalance skin

Our skin is constantly changing. Blame it on the weather, hormones, our lifestyle, environmental stressors like pollution...there are a lot of different factors that can impact our skin on a daily basis. What’s so great about clay masks is their ability to help rebalance and clean skin.

They encourage self-care

Clay masks should be used 1-2 times a week, depending on your skin’s needs. You need to leave them on for at least 10 minutes to give the minerals in the formula time to work. Rather than multitasking during the application time, use those 10+ minutes to relax, meditate or sit still for once.

All skin types can benefit

Clay masks are popular with oily skin types because of how well they work to soak up excess oil, help draw out impurities from pores and decongest skin. But all these things aren’t necessarily attributes that appeal to dry skin types. Luckily, there are a number of different clay types used in mask formulas so you simply need to pick the right one for you. If you have dry skin, opt for a pink clay mask. You may also want to find a formula that’s enriched with other hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and flannel flower.

The types of clay masks

It’s important to match your skin concerns to the type of clay in the mask. Did you know that each type of clay is made up of a unique composition of minerals? Here’s a guide to who each clay mask type is best suited to:

White clay

One of the mildest clays, white clay (also referred to as white kaolin clay) can absorb excess oil from skin without irritating or drying it out. Because it is gentle on skin, it’s a great option for sensitive skin.

Green clay

Green clay is ideal for oily, combination, and acne-prone skin. It works to restore balance to skin by soaking up excess sebum that can clog pores and lead to congestion and breakouts.

Pink clay

If you have dry skin then a pink clay mask is best for you. Mature skin and sensitive skin will also benefit from a pink clay mask as it can leave the complexion looking supple and youthful. Additionally, pink clay can help reduce irritation and inflammation.

Bentonite clay

Often grey in colour as it comes from volcanic ash, bentonite clay masks are super absorbent. They’re a top choice for oily skin. Bentonite clay can leave you with a radiant and refreshed appearance, as well as deliver light exfoliating benefits.

Choosing a clay mask

Since your skin’s needs change regularly, it’s a good idea to build up a bit of a ‘clay mask wardrobe’ so you’re always ready to address your skin’s current needs. We like the Minenssey Clay Mask Exploration Set. It comes with four single-use Minenssey Clay Masks: 1x Hydrating Clay Mask; 1x Deep Cleansing Clay Mask; 1x Minenssey Brightening Clay Mask; and 1x Minenssey Rejuvenating Clay Mask.
