3 ways to boost your makeup base in spring

Written by Chelsea Tromans

Spring is here! As we go from the cooler temperatures of winter into the season of new beginnings, it’s time to reassess your makeup choices when it comes to your complexion. Rich textures and full coverage bases are commonplace in winter to hide lacklustre skin, however spring is a great time to take a fresher approach. Think a lighter finish, a dewier look, and maybe even the occasional makeup-free day.

Here are three ways to boost your base in spring:

Go for a lighter texture

When the weather is warmer, we tend to favour lighter foundation formulas that don’t leave us feeling sweaty and cakey. Liquid foundation formulas help to give skin a natural-looking finish that’s not too heavy and not too light. Consider opting for one that delivers a medium coverage that evens out the skin tone, conceals imperfections, but feels lightweight on your skin.

Napoleon Perdis Stroke Of Genius Liquid Cashmere Foundation contains skin-protecting antioxidants like vitamins C and E along with Microlens Pure Light Technology to help boost your skin’s radiance. The medium coverage helps cover up those dull signs of winter skin as you transition into spring while still feeling breathable and light on your skin’s surface during warm sunny days.

Mix your foundation with a face oil

Craving a glowier base during the warmer months? Customise your go-to liquid foundation by mixing it with a few drops of face oil or a hydrating serum. It’s a great way to give any foundation a sheerer texture and boost its radiant finish. Simply apply your desired amount of foundation into the palm of your hand and add one to two drops of serum depending on how dewy you want your skin to look. Mix the two together then smooth over your face with your fingers or a foundation brush.

Our pick: Minenssey Rejuvenating Superfood Facial Elixir. It’s packed with a nourishing blend of superfood seed oils that help leave skin looking dewy-fresh.

Tip: If you are still working your way through finishing your winter foundation, adding an oil to it is a great way to give it a spring update without having to waste what’s left.

Colour correct with a primer

Flaky winter complexions tend to need more heavy duty coverage to conceal lacklustre skin. But in spring, hopefully the change of weather will see your skin overcome its issues of dryness and dullness and instead - with the help of a great line-up of skincare - you may even find the confidence to ditch the foundation altogether. If your skin is looking radiant and plump all on its own with few imperfections that you feel the need to cover up, a primer might be all you need to follow up your skincare routine with. We love Napoleon Perdis Autopilot Brightening Skin Primer. Its lilac tinted formula works as a colour corrector for counteracting any yellow tones in your skin that can leave you looking sallow. The result is skin that appears brighter without the need for makeup.
